Shortcut To Life

I graduated college a semester early. I'm like to say I did it for the right reasons, to work for a while, or to save my parents money, but I did it for a boy. My boyfriend in college lived in DC, and I was in Connecticut, and when the opportunity came to graduate early, I thought perfect, I'll go home and be with him.

My parents were against it. They felt that you only have your college years once, and by giving them up I was short circuiting myself. My dad wanted me to take a year off before law school, and I managed to convince him that I could work for those 8 months and that would be the same thing. So they reluctantly agreed. But they hated the boyfriend, and I'm sure they knew the real reason.

The boyfriend broke up with me in November. The week before the LSATS. I graduated in December and came home.

But, I cam home to an amazing job. By some of the most bizarre luck in the world I got a job for 8 months at the Department of Justice Office of Professional Development and Training, which trained police officers and prosecutors in third world countries. It was one of the best jobs I ever had. I saved money for my living expenses when I was in law school And I met one of my best friends at that job.

That December is also when I met Doug. I dated his roommate first, but that's when we got to be friends.

Even though I did it for the wrong reasons, I'm glad I graduated college early. It did give me a break before law school, and who knows where I would be if I had not done so. I may not have Doug. I may not have Michael.

It's funny how things have a way of working out.

I graduated early, too. Also told myself it was for money, for bragging rights, but it was totally for a boy. A boy who turned into the man I married. SO I guess it worked out ok. (Although, I think we would've gotten married if I'd stayed in school and that last year... well, I'll never know!)

Awwww! I love how things just seem to happen for a reason, but not always for the reason you were planning on. :)
